Geography

Mr Caulfield is subject leader for Geography.  He is a member of the Geographical Association. 

Our aims

Our Geography curriculum is designed to develop children’s curiosity and fascination about the world and the people that are surrounding them. 

We offer a structure and sequence of geography lessons, carefully ensuring the skills and aims of the national curriculum are embedded throughout engaging lessons and activities. As children progress from the foundation stage to their final years at school, they will become increasingly confident with the four aspects of geography identified in the curriculum:  locational knowledge place knowledge, human and physical geography and geographical skills and fieldwork.

How we teach geography

Children have a range of opportunities to experience geography through practical engaging tasks beyond the classroom. Teachers are able to assess children’s knowledge and skills gained through a range of media, as children are often tasked with presenting their understanding in creative ways; including posters, videos, presentations, cartoons, stories, discussions and debates.

Children use maps and recognise physical and human features to do with the local area, building to using maps to explore the continents and oceans of the world. They compare where they live to places outside of Europe and ask and answer geographical questions. Through revisiting and consolidating skills, our lesson plans and resources help children build on prior knowledge alongside introducing new skills and challenges.

Our children as geographers

We believe that the impact of using these carefully planned and cross-curricular geography lessons and topics will provide a love of learning to pupils across the school. Children progress their geographical skills at a clear and steady pace, being able to delve deeply into a given topic using a range of media and technologies.  

All children use geographical vocabulary accurately and understand the different strands of geography, with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. Children begin to make relevant links from geography to other curriculum subjects, such as history and science.

They improve their enquiry skills and inquisitiveness about the world around them, and their own impact on the world. 

All children will realise that they have choices to make in the world, developing a positive commitment to the environment and the future of the planet.
