Intent

We believe that all children will be able to master mathematical concepts deeply. We feel it is important for all children to have a love of and lasting confidence towards mathematics so that it can go on to support them in later life.

Our intention for Mathematics is for children to receive a rich and balanced curriculum which will develop their ability to reason, problem-solve and develop fluent conceptual understanding.

We use a ‘Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract’ approach which enables all children to experience hands-on learning when discovering new mathematical topics.  Arithmetic and basic maths skills are practised daily to ensure key mathematical concepts are embedded and children can recall this information to make rich connections across other areas of the curriculum.

We aim to develop and deepen children’s fluency, reasoning and competence in solving increasingly challenging problems.  Our curriculum allows children to make better sense of the world around them and prepare for everyday life.

Implementation

We use a Maths Mastery approach in our teaching throughout the school.  A whole class teaching approach is adopted where the needs of every child are addressed through skilful questioning and appropriate, immediate intervention which provides the necessary scaffolding or challenge for all.

Concepts are taught in greater depth to ensure the children have a deeper understanding which they can apply in different mathematical situations.

Each lesson enables the children to repeat and rehearse mathematical skills to support the child in moving knowledge and skills to long term memory.  We give the children the opportunity to explore the concept being taught extensively before moving on.

We believe in giving children the opportunity to explore a maths concept in many different ways, using pictorial and abstract examples to support the children’s understanding.

We value mathematical talk and as a result, lessons include regular opportunities for the children to discuss their understanding and explain their thinking.

We use the NCETM Teaching for Mastery, NRich, White Rose and other resources as we feel this provides our children with approaches to support individual progress. We ensure that our lessons are taught in creative and engaging ways using open-ended problems and a wide range of equipment to aid and support our children in their learning.

Impact

As a result of our Maths teaching, you will see engaged children who are all challenged.  Confident learners who can all talk about Maths and their learning and make links between topics.  Our school attainment is high, we moderate Mathematics both internally and externally with local schools and our children are achieving well.   Evidence will be found in their ability to choose an effective mental or written strategy to support their mathematical thinking.  Feedback and interventions support children to strive to be the best mathematicians they can be.

At St. Cecilia's Catholic Primary School, we are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children in all circumstances and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. To read more about our commitment to safeguarding please view our safeguarding policy.
