Our aim

Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE) aims to equip children with essential skills for life. We aim to develop the whole child through carefully planned and resourced lessons  that develop the knowledge, skills and attributes children need to protect and enhance their wellbeing. Through these lessons, children will learn how to stay safe and healthy, build and  maintain successful relationships and become active citizens, responsibly participating in society around them.

Lessons have their foundations in seeing each and everybody’s value in society, recognising British Values, to promoting strong and positive views on ourselves and others.

The themes support social, moral, spiritual and cultural development and provide children with protective teaching on essential safeguarding issues, developing the knowledge of when and how children can ask for help.

How we teach PSHCE

We implement the PSHCE curriculum through the ‘Bounce Back’  scheme of work. There are ten curriculum units in each level which reflect on the relevance of the key messages to their own well being. Each unit is related to a topic which begins with a Circle Time as a starting point to engage with important life issues in a safe and comfortable way. Many units feature role-play and drama opportunities alongside high quality educational games for cooperative learning.

Our children as healthy global citizens

Our children have the vocabulary and confidence needed to clearly articulate  their thoughts and feelings in a climate of openness, trust and respect, and know when and how they can seek the support of others. They can prioritise their physical and mental health and wellbeing and can understand their own wellbeing needs, practise self-care and contribute  positively to the wellbeing of those around them.

Our PSHCE curriculum has a positive impact on the whole child, including their academic development and progress, reducing any social and emotional barriers to learning, building confidence and self-esteem. Our approach to learning in Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education helps every child to become a well-rounded global citizen who understands how different people around the world live their lives.

At St. Cecilia's Catholic Primary School, we are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children in all circumstances and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. To read more about our commitment to safeguarding please view our safeguarding policy.
