How we teach the children about online safety - being smart, alert, strong, kind and brave!

We use the "Internet Legends" programme from Google to help our pupils learn more about their safety online.

THE PROGRAMME, FOR PUPILS IN KEY STAGE 2, FOCUSES ON FOUR AREAS:

Be Internet Sharp

Good (and bad) news travels fast online, and children can sometimes find themselves in tricky situations with lasting consequences. But what can they do to prevent this? The answer: understand how to share smartly with those they know – and those they don’t.

Every Word Matters

Treat online communication the same as face-to-face communication.
If it isn’t right to say, it isn’t right to post. If in doubt, get guidance on what kind of communication is (and isn’t) OK.
Personal details about family, friends – and yourself – should stay private.

Be Internet Alert
It’s important to help our pupils become aware that people and situations online aren’t always as they seem. Discerning between what’s real and what’s fake is a very real lesson in online safety.

Be Internet Secure
Personal privacy and security are just as important online as they are offline. Safeguarding valuable information helps our pupils avoid damaging their devices, reputations, and relationships.

Be Internet Kind
The Internet is a powerful amplifier that can be used to spread positivity or negativity. Children need to use our charter of values and remember the core message of “treat others as you would like to be treated” when communicating online, creating positive impact for others and disempowering bullying behaviour.

Be Internet Brave
When children come across something questionable, they should feel comfortable talking to a trusted adult. Adults can support this behavior by fostering open communication at home and in the classroom.

We will send home the Be Internet Awesome pledge for each family to read through and agree - another way of supporting online safety, both at home and in school.

Online gaming and interactive live streaming apps present a considerable risk to children, as they use the webcam on your child's computer and use live video. TikTok is a new, highly popular app, it used to be called Music.ly.

We highly recommend that your child does not have a laptop or computer with a webcam in his/her bedroom.

FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

Parents of children with special educational needs to to take extra care when their child is online.
