RE
RE is taught by your child’s class teacher, each and every week of the school year.
Intent
Our aim is that children leave St Cecilia’s School with a wide range of happy and rich memories in RE formed through interesting and exciting experiences driven through an engaging and comprehensive curriculum. The Religious Education within the school promotes awe, wonder, reverence and spirituality within every child. It is based on knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith, enabling them to develop a living and personal faith in Jesus Christ and allows them to know and love God.
RE is the foundation of the entire education process and permeates the whole curriculum and school life. Children will develop an awareness of God’s presence in their lives and the lives of others, developing the spiritual life of each child through prayer and reflection. Children will be prepared for life in a multi faith society by fostering respect for and understanding of rich cultural diversity.
Implementation
RE is a core subject of the curriculum. At St. Cecilia’s we follow the ‘Come and See’ Religious Education Programme in line with guidance from the Education Commission - Archdiocese of Southwark, and this programme is followed throughout school from Nursery through to Year 6.
We enrich the programme along with PSHE and RSE which allows our experiences and lessons to be more creative and tailored to our children. It also allows for us to further challenge and question our children on their understandings and opinions. It provides opportunities for celebration, prayer and reflection. Children will be highly engaged in RE lessons through the use of a variety of sources such as religious stories, scripture, religious artwork, songs, drama, music, dance and religious signs and symbols.
Links are made with the children's own experience and with universal experience. It will enable them to explore the beliefs, values and way of life of the Catholic tradition and other faith traditions.
Pupils participate in daily Collective Worship and frequently celebrate Mass, feast days and Holy days. Opportunities are provided for children to experience learning beyond the classroom. The use of visits and visitors in school enhance the RE curriculum.
Impact
The children at St. Cecilia’s have a wide understanding of the Catholic faith as well as other faiths and traditions. Our link between RE, RSE and PSHCE strengthens the children’s understanding of themselves as a spiritual being, through understanding themselves they will be stronger and able to help others in the world. Through R.E. our children are developing an understanding of other people’s cultures and ways of life, which they are then able to communicate to the wider community.
