Children transfer to secondary school at the end of Year 6.  Preparations begin in Year 5 when families can attend some local open evenings.  The main open evenings and the application process take place in the Autumn term of Year 6.  Application dates can vary by school and parents will need to ensure that they apply correctly and on time.  Further guidance is given below.  We are very fortunate to have so many good secondary schools in this area.

Arrangements for Open Evening (1st October) have had to be altered for this year as a result of the coronavirus situation.  We are therefore in the process of organising the safest and most effective way of offering this facility to parents of potential new students and details will be finalised imminently.  Information regarding the Open Evening, which will be in a ‘virtual’ format this year, will be publicised on our website prior to 1st October and this may be of interest to you should you wish to attend.

Richard Challoner is a highly successful Catholic comprehensive school for boys aged 11-18, and girls aged 16-18, which has been serving the local Catholic community since 1959. The school is a DfE designated Academy with Specialisms in Technology and Sports.  It is heavily oversubscribed, with four applicants for each place available. The school continues to grow and now has 1000 students on roll, including 260 in the Sixth Form, which is federated with Holy Cross School in New Malden. At the heart of the school is its distinctive Catholic Ethos, which in turn is supported by the excellent relationships which exist between the staff and the students. A shared vision for the school is supported by the staff, students, parents and governors, which has created a very strong caring and cohesive community based on the Christian values of love, respect and compassion for others.

Due to the current restrictions and keeping in line with the published social distancing guidance, all Open Mornings will be held remotely through a live webinar detailing admission to the school. The Headteacher will speak during each webinar and you will have the chance to type questions for the Head to address during each live session. The webinars will take place on a range of days and times to accommodate family needs, each will be one hour in length. Spaces are limited to 40 and booking is essential via the link below. Should there be an increased demand for spaces, extra webinars may be added.

St Philomena's School was first established in 1893, when the Daughters of the Cross purchased Carshalton House. This was advertised in The Times of 1859 as having "extensive and very complete arrangements for conducting an important scholastic establishment situated in finely timbered park grounds".
The school is situated in twenty-five acres of beautiful parkland and in buildings which include a refurbished Queen Anne Mansion. Since its foundation, the school has given its pupils every opportunity to develop spiritually, intellectually and socially in the context of a Catholic community which is forward looking while maintaining all that is best of traditional values.

Year 7 Virtual Open Event 2020
Unfortunately, in the current climate, we are not able to welcome you in person to our traditional Year 7 Open Evening. This year the school will be hosting its first ever Virtual Year 7 Open Event which will be available to access from 5.30 pm on Monday 28th September through to 9.00 am on Monday 5th October.  

This will be an opportunity to find out more about our vibrant school community. Booking will not be required. A link will be posted here closer to the time of the event. 


The Open Event will include;

  • A 'welcome talk' from the Headteacher and Head of School
  • A talk from the Head of Lower School and Director of Year 7
  • A video of some Year 7 students sharing their experiences of joining Holy Cross 
  • Our school video where you will hear about our unique ethos and richly diverse community 
  • A range of department videos where Heads of Department (and some students) will share information about life at Holy Cross and the range of opportunities and experiences on offer to Holy Cross students
  • Information on how to apply for a place in Year 7
  • An opportunity to submit any questions through an online form  

School Tours 
Parents and carers of Year 6 girls with a confirmed EHCP only will be able to book a school tour by contacting the main school office following the Year 7 Virtual Open Event.

Due to the restrictions posed by COVID19 St Andrew's will be holding a Virtual Open Evening this year. The evening will go live on our Website at 5.00pm on the 23rd September 2020. The evening will run from 5.00pm until 7.30pm with the Headteachers address taking place at 6.45pm. There will be an opportunity to visit departments, ask questions of Heads of Department, attend live presentations about Learning and Teaching and the Extended Curriculum. There will also be an opportunity to hear from some of our current students across the school. Information packs will be available to download on the night. We are hoping that should the current restrictions be relaxed across the country there may be an opportunity later in the year to visit the school in person. We look forward to welcoming you.

The Pan London Admission System
Since September 2005, all 33 London Local Authorities and 4 local authorities that border London have coordinated admissions to their schools.  The system is a voluntary extension of the requirement by the Government that all councils co-ordinate admissions to their schools within their area.  Previously parents in London who applied to several schools, often in more than one Local Authority, may have received more than one offer, which meant that others received no offer at all.  The Pan London system reduces multiple offers and gives one offer per parent across London at the initial stage.

Making your application
Find out as much as you can about the schools that you are considering:

  • look at the Local Authority online booklets and the school prospectuses

  • attend open days

  • identify any schools that need a supplementary form (all Catholic Schools will require a supplementary form and these may have a different closing date)

  • consider the admission criteria for each school in order to assess the likelihood of being offered a place

  • once you have all of this information you can complete the application

  • you must complete the application form for the Local Authority in which you live, regardless of the location of the schools you wish to apply for or where your child currently attends school.

  •  if you live in Sutton you can name up to 6 schools.

  • you must submit the application form to your home Local Authority by 31 October.

  • you can apply online anytime up to midnight on 31 October 2020 on your local authority's admissions website.

  • you will receive e-mail confirmation once your form has been submitted

  • once submitted you can change your application at any time until midnight on 31 October 2020.  Please remember to apply on time!

By working together with any other local authorities where you have applied for schools, your home local authority will work out the best single offer that can be made guided by the    order in which you ranked them on your application form.  Your home Local Authority will send you the outcome of your application on 2 March by first class post if you made a paper application.  In Sutton, if you have applied online you will not be sent a letter, but you will be able to access your results from the evening of 2 March.

SEN and the Transfer Process

Children with Education Health Care Plans have a different application process, discussions around secondary transfer will often commence much earlier with your local authority SEN team, please contact Mrs Gallant for more information.
